A Puerto Rican former convict, just released from prison, pledges to stay away from drugs and violence despite the pressure around him and lead on to a better life outside of N.Y.C.

Serpico is a 1973 American neo-noir [3] crime drama film directed by Sidney Lumet and starring Al Pacino . Waldo Salt and Norman Wexler wrote the screenplay, adapting Peter Maas 's biography of NYPD officer Frank Serpico , who went undercover to expose corruption in the police force. Both Maas's book and the film cover 12 years, 1960 to 1972. [4]

Serpico was born in Brooklyn, New York , the youngest child of Vincenzo and Maria Giovanna Serpico, Italian immigrants from Marigliano . At the age of 17, he enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed for two years in South Korea as an infantryman. He then worked as a part-time private investigator and a youth counselor while attending Brooklyn College . [4]
